Ye Olde Yellow Pages, Thorne, Yorkshire

Here we find an entry for some Armitage Ancestors in Trade Directories for the Thorne area.

In a trade directory for 1822 in Thorne (busy place!!), a George ARMITAGE is listed as a Stonemason & merchant.
I searched the 1828-9 Pigot's directory & found no Armitages in Thorne.
In a trade directory for 1837 in Thorne, Mr Geo. ARMITAGE is listed under Bricklayers, King St. (I think that's our Walter's Father.)

Here are some entries copied from the 1855 Slater's Trade Directory for the Thorne area of Yorkshire, which relate to the Armitage family. {no Fosters found - our George Foster became a butcher later on}
  • William Armitage, agent to the Thorne Steam Packet Co., (Thorne Quay), Finkle St.
  • William Armitage, agent to the Mutual (life assurance), Finkle St.
  • William Armitage, agent to the Protestant (fire/general insurance??), Finkle St.
  • William Armitage, chemist & druggist, Finkle St.
  • Armitage Bros, rope makers & Flax dressers, Thorne Quay.
  • Armitage Bros, sail makers, Thorne Quay.
  • George Armitage, Stone mason, King St.

Source Information:

Durham, Northumberland, and Yorkshire Royal National Commercial Directory, 1855 [database on-line at Ancestry.com]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2004. Original data: Slater's Royal National Commercial Directory of the Northern Counties. Vol. I. Manchester and London, England: Isaac Slater, 1855.

In the 1881 Kelly's Directory for West Riding of Yorkshire, in the Thorne listing there are several Armitages:

  • Armitage, George, stonemason
  • Armitage, George, jun. stonemason
  • Armitage, Walter, millwright
  • Armitage, William, druggist & farmer
Also a Foster, Joseph, solicitor.
And under Private Residents (rather than Commercial)
  • Foster, Edward,
  • Foster, Joseph, Clifton Lodge

See more on historical trade directories here (England & Wales only).

From this source I found a listing (not sure if that link will work) for our uncle, Ewart Armitage, in West Street, Alford, as an Engineer. That is in the Kelly's Directory for Lincolnshire, 1919 (9th Ed.).

Also a listing for the Windmill Co. I've been looking for (for another family branch), in Staffs.
