Kitchen Table Genealogy

Again, in this post we find out about the Kitchen family - courtesy of the research done by a cousin, Julie. I'm very grateful to her for sharing.

This time we are travelling back in time a little.
The name Kitching seems to be interchangeable with Kitchen & Kitchin (NB: spelling of names was very flexible until a while after 1837 when registration began).

James Kitching was born in 1781, in Brampton, Lincolnshire.
He married a lass named Sarah Morehouse in 1800 in the Yorkshire town of Kirk Bramwith (near Fishlake). He is entered in the 1851 census at Wood End, Kirk Bramwith, Yorkshire - as a farmer of 4 acres. Between 1800 & 1822, they had 5 girls and 5 boys: the second son was named James (born 1808).

This James Kitching married a much younger lass, Amelia (also known as Millie; born 1820, from High Hoyland, Cumberworth, Yorks). Amelia's maiden name remains a mystery just now. They lived in High Hoyland for a while, and their first three children were born there. The third of those was our Mary, born in 1846. Their fourth child (Elijah Pickles Kitching) was born while they lived at Wood End, Kirk Bramwith, where James was a farmer of 40 acres {1851 Census}.

By the Census of 1861, James is a farmer of 50 acres - this time in Fishlake. James & Amelia have 2 more children in Fishlake, George (1852) and Ann Eliza (1859).
The 1871 Census shows the family at Far End, Fishlake - farming 67 acres. Finally the 1881 census shows the couple at Hay Green, Fishlake - farming just 3 and a half acres. By now they are retired and their son, Elijah, has taken over the main farm.

Their third child Mary married George Foster of Fishlake (from a family who are also farmers) - they lived at Hay Green, Fishlake {1881 & 1891 census}. We have more information on George & Mary's family in an earlier post.

High Hoyland links

Wikipedia.
There's a site which lists transcriptions on Headstones at a church in High Hoyland. It doesn't show any of the names we see in this post, but there is a record of a Kitchingman (on a Broken cross with bottom pedestal missing). Sadly it is undated :
