We have a copy of the marriage certificate of her parents (William & Janet Brack). We also saw their gravestone in Comrie in an earlier post.
Also, I looked them up in the census return for Comrie in 1901 (28, Drummond St., Comrie), and in registry office indices…The following is a summary of the details I've found so far.
William Spence Brack (b. ~1871, d. 1940) possibly from Berwickshire? (it's hard to read the word) and employed as Woodsman, then later described as 'Estate Labourer'.
Janet Brack (nee McKerracher) (b. 1869, d. 1941) born in Comrie. She worked as a 'Domestic Servant' before her marriage.
They married in January 1901 in Comrie. The births of Brack children in the area are listed here - (I don't know yet if they are all related.)
- William BRACK, 1902 (Their first child)
- John McKerracher BRACK, 1905 (William & Janet definitely did have a son named John);
- Robert BRACK, 1907 (not sure if he's a sibling of my Gran);
- Janet McGregor BRACK, 1914 (my Grandmother).
Janet and William Brack lived at a place called Glasdale, Comrie in 1901. (Janet Junior's first child (William) is listed as being born there.) Glasdale is near The Ross (just by the Ross Bridge) and was where Jen and Queenie were living (Janet's cousins).
William Brack's family
From their marriage certificate, we know their respective parents: Willm Brack's parents were Willm Brack (deceased Labourer) and Catherine (nee Spence, deceased). Robert Brack was a witness to the marriage – perhaps he was the groom's brother? From census sources, we know that William Brack was born in c.1867 in Coldingham, Berwickshire.
If I show you the details from the 1891 Census for Coldingham, Berwickshire, you will see that William Brack's father is also named William Brack. Our William is aged 23 and living with his parents at Greenwood Cottage, and is shown as having been born in Coldingham.
William Brack (53, born West Gordon, Berwick; Farm Servant)
Wife Catherine Brack (52, born Coldingham)
Their children:
William (23)
Robert (21; Farm servant)
Peter (17, born Ayton; Farm servant)
John (14, born Old Ladykirk; Farm Servant)
Andrew (13, born Duns; Scholar)
Helen (11, born Ayton; Scholar)
I will show you earlier census returns for this family in a later post.
Janet Brack's family
Janet McKerracher's parents were listed on her marriage certificate as John McKerracher (b.~1832 in Comrie, Shoemaker) and Janet McKerracher (nee McGregor). She was also known as Jessie, and was born 1834 in Blackford and died ~1918. They married in 1872.
The 1891 Census returns lists John & Janet (Jessie) McKerracher as living with 3 of their children, then in their teens. These are thought to be Grandma's aunts & uncles?? Youngest is Margaret E. McKerracher (b. 1878, d. 1943); then Duncan (b.1874 Comrie, married Jessie Calder in Edinburgh, d. 1933 Edinburgh); Peter (b. 1873, d. 1920).
There is also reference in the records to a John McKerracher who died aged 19 in Comrie, (b. 1864, d. 1883) – so he was perhaps an older brother/cousin??
NB John & Janet married in 1872, which was after the recorded births of John & Janet Junior. I have their marriage certificate now, which records that the couple married at Glasdale, Comrie. It gives the parents' names as Duncan McKerracher (Labourer) & Janet McGregor...and Peter McGregor (Labourer) and Margaret Bayne. We know that Janet & Peter McGregor were siblings, and the 1872 marriage certificate states that the bride & groom were cousins.
The McKerracher Elders
On the ancestors of Jessie & John McKerracher; much of this information comes to me thanks to the hard research of a McKerracher cousin, Duncan. "Hello" to Duncan, by the way. I came into contact with him through the internet & he's been very kind in passing on all sorts of useful information about his family and our common ancestors.
We can go as far back as Jessie's grandparents Duncan McGregor & Margaret Carmichael, about whom all I know is that they were married in 1799!
